FORTRESS UAMO city-tour exhibition in Sofia
September 10 – October 11, 2015
Opening: Thursday, September 10, 6.30 PM
Sofia Arsenal – Museum for Contemporary Art, 2, Cherni Vryh Blvd.
Fortress is a joint project between SAMCA, Goethe-Institut Sofia and the UAMO festival, Munich. Curator is Nadezhda Dzhakova. It features exhibitions and workshops on the above topic in both Sofia and Munich.
This current exhibition, Fortress, can be viewed as a follow-up of the Situation Sofia series of exhibitions organized by Nadezhda Dzhakova and Svilen Stefanov in collaboration with Vanja Koubadinska and Enzio Wetzel of the Goethe Institute, but also as an awareness of the rising of a new, changing Europe.
What is our “fortress” and do we really want to stick inside?
Surrounded by the common wall of the museum hall, works of site-specific art, photography, painting and graphic art, short films – totally different media, concepts and creative approaches suddenly become congruous, brought together by the common “fortress”. How can this be accessed? Artists Alexander Valchev, Galya Yotova, Ivaylo Hristov, Kamen Starchev, Ludmil Lazarov and Yana Lozeva present their approaches.
Three short movies on the topic will be screened within the exhibition. These were created during a workshop organized by the Goethe-Institut Sofia, and implemented by German director R.Blank. The experimental films by Anna Nikolova, Elena Genovska, Milena Ilieva, Silvia Pesheva, Maya Kisyova, Smilen Savov and Atanas Dzhidrov give a possible answer: these approach the city from different angles following the characters in their daily routine.
Works from the exhibition will be presented at the UAMO 2016 festival, in Munich, together with works from 10 other cities, such Athens, Mexico City, Amsterdam, Vienna and Prague.
